If you access the website of the widley popular genealogy company 23andMe, they say that they are committed to privacy, as well as a safe and secure place to explore questions about ones DNA. Although this may be their intent, the reality is that 23andMe along with their millions of users have been the victim of a massive data breach this month. On Friday, the company tried to calm worries, stating that only 14,000 users (or .1% of their database) experienced any issues of data being compromised. What we are now learning however, is that this breach has impacted a total 6.9 million users in actuality.
This is a very similar situation to the recent Okta breach covered by Adam on a recent episode of the Nyedis Anarchy Series, where the company at first downplayed how massive of an attack they had experienced. This is not the first time 23andMe has experienced a wide data breach which they have blamed previously on customers reusing passwords allowing a brute-force hack. You can learn more about this situation over at TechCrunch, and we will update as well once more is learned.
